About this Artwork
From the latter part of my Rose period, this powerful piece, like many, ends up painting its own story and I have little control. The sheer size and purpleness of this rose is not for the weak and I was bowled over working on it. The depth, darkness and female mystery here implies a veritable ocean of fertility, potentiality and power that’s been leashed too long and feels unstable. I tried to find a Kanji character to describe this fertility goddess and destroyer of the underworld, and all that kept coming to me was the Kanji character for the Virgin. After much resistance, I finally accepted this and painted it. This powerful medicine rose and statement piece is available in a variety of sizes.
